Ebooks outsell Paper on Amazon

Yes, you read correctly. ^-^ As a writer of ebooks, this announcement filled me with great joy. I think it's only a matter of time for the same to happen at B&N as their Nooks are yet to be shipped (which by the way sold out from what I've been told). Gotta love what all these ereaders are doing for the business.

Merry Christmas!

Just wishing everyone a Merry Christmas! I hope all are well and spending a wonderful day with your loved ones. I know I'll be napping as the kids (husband included) had me up before 6am *sigh* and it's a rainy day, which makes it a day to snuggle up with a good book and relax. Stay safe!

Fantasy Friday and belated Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone had a safe and blessed Thanksgiving. I had family over and ate too much food. I didn't even get on the net yesterday, which is unusual for me. Today I spent the day getting my Christmas tree up and the inside decorations. Tomorrow is outside decoration day and some more family is coming to stay the night with us. So, it's a busy weekend for me!

Happy Halloween and the start of a Giveaway!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween.
I miss the whole trick or treating thing and there was no party for me to attend this year *sigh* However, we went to Howl-O-Scream (at Busch Gardens, Tampa) last week and had a blast in the haunted houses! Loved seeing my boys scared. *evil laugh*
I meant to do this earlier this week, but getting multiple root canals done and life in general kind up mess up my plans... So I'm going to start this giveaway now, today and extend it to Wednesday Nov 4th.
I'll make it easy to be entered. Just email me a favorite costume or Halloween tradition between now and Midnight EST on Wed. Your name will be entered for random drawing.
The prize? A box of goodies, including a variety of books (however many the box will hold :D ).
Note: The goodie box is for US residents only. If the winner is outside the US, they will be eligible for an alternate prize.
So don't hesitate to send me an email at

Interviews and a giveaway...

I realized yesterday that there was a lag in my Tantalizing Tuesdays and Fantasy Fridays. Sorry. I thought I had them done in advance (as I apparently wrote on my calendar) but come to find out I wrote the note a bit prematurely. My deepest apologies! I'll try to do much better. ^-^

Okay, on to some news. Sometime today an interview will be posted over at The Sweet Flag Blog (owned by my dear friend Jeanne Barrack) featuring ... ME! I'm also running a giveaway, so make sure you stop by and take a look and leave a comment to enter. You might actually learn something about me too. ;)

Also, don't forget that I'm also one of Featured Members at The Romance Studio's newest venture- The Rainbow Studio (Just for GLBT fiction). I've got an interview posted there along with some information on my latest book.

Also, I'm planning on running another giveaway next week in celebration of Halloween. So stay tuned...

Have a wonderful night. I'm off to Hallo-Scream with the family tonight to enjoy some scares in haunted houses and the roller coasters (at Busch Gardens).

We all need a laugh sometimes...

A laugh to brighten your day...

A retired corporate executive decided to take a vacation. He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life...until the boat sank!

He found himself on an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day, when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to the shore. In disbelief, he asks her, "Where did you come from? How did you get here?"

She replies, "I rowed from the other side of the island. I landed here when my cruise ship sank."

"Amazing," he says. "You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up withyou."

"Oh, this?" replies the woman. "I made the boat out of raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm branch and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptustree."

"But, where did you get the tools?"

"Oh, that was no problem," replied the woman. "On the south side of the island, a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock is exposed. I found if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable, ductile iron. I used that for tools and used the tools to make the hardware."

The guy is stunned.

"Let's row over to my place," she says. After a few hours of rowing, she docks the boat at a small wharf.

As the man looks to shore, he nearly falls out off the boat. Before him is a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb struck.

As they walk into the house, she says casually, "It's not much, but I call it home. Sit down, please. Would you like a drink?"

"No. No, thank you," he says, still dazed. "Can't take any more coconut juice."

"It's not coconut juice," the woman replies. "I have a still. How about aPina Colada?"

Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they have exchanged their stories, the woman announces, "I'm going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There is a razor upstairs in the bathroom cabinet."

No longer questioning anything, the man goes into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet, is a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to ahollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside a swivel mechanism."This woman is amazing," he muses. "What next?"

When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but vines and flowers strategically positioned, and smelling of gardenias. She beckons for him to sit down next to her! . "Tell me," she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, "We've been out here for a really long time. You've been lonely. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something you've been longing for all these months?" She stares into his eyes and takes his hand in hers...

He can't believe what he's hearing. He swallows excitedly, tears start to form in his eyes, and he says, "You mean... I can check my e-mail from here?"

Well, it's that time of year again. School has started. This year, my children are actually going to a Charter school rather than homeschooling like last year. This had me celebrating as I thought I'd have more time to write or do the dreaded housework without interruptions. *ppft* Riiiiight.

Anyway, this has led me to give my readers a chance to win my latest release, Never Too Late.

It's real easy. Just drop a note here, saying hi or what do you have planned now that school has started again. A name will be randomly drawn and the winner will receive a copy of Never Too Late.

Contest and Never Too Late excerpt

Those who know me know that I always have a contest with a release. This month is no exception.

The Prize: A box full of books and goodies I received from the Romantic Times Convention.

NOTE: This prize if only for United States residents. If the winner lives outside of the US, the prize will be replaced by an e-book of winner’s choice.

What do you have to do: Send me an email with the answer to the question below to (marty AT martyrayne DOT com) Make sure that “NTL Contest” is in the subject line.

Question: The main character for Never Too Late is Dakota Knight. Which book was he first introduced? (hint: Answer on the front page of my website)

Bonus question for an extra chance to win: In the book Dakota was introduced in, what dish did he cook for Nate and Kyle?

All participate's names will be placed in a hat on Wed, Aug 12th and a name will be drawn at random. So make sure you get your entries in by midnight (EST time) on Aug. 11th.

Dakota watched Brice fidget in his seat, and felt the sudden tension sizzle the air. He found the young man intriguing as well as tantalizingly handsome. Brice’s relationship with Winter interested him, and he wondered why he’d never met or heard about the kid before today, especially since he and Winter appeared to be quite close.

“What do you do, Brice?”

“Do?” He appeared shocked at the question. “Oh, you mean my job?”

Dakota raised his brow and tried not to laugh at the young man’s obvious edginess.

“I’m a massage therapist.”

That got Dakota’s attention. Lowering his gaze to Brice’s hands, he noticed how soft-looking they were. No calluses or cuts were visible. No signs that he did manual labor.

“You any good?”

This question caused Brice to choke on his food. Dakota watched without expression, gauging the reaction.

“Let’s just say that I have no trouble filling in forty hours of work in a week.”

“Tell me about your business. Is it just you? Do you specialize in a particular modality? Do you make home visits?” He took a bite of food as he waited an answer.

Brice stared at him for a moment, making Dakota a bit uncomfortable at the scrutiny. Amazing how after all this time at this job, he still disliked being the center of attention.

“You know a lot about massage therapy?”

“I’ve picked up some skill here and there.” He shrugged nonchalantly. Brice didn’t have to know that with his rates, he dealt mostly with the filthy rich who could afford private massage therapists. He’d looked into it and socialized with therapists to learn effective techniques to use on his clients. It never hurt to learn new tricks when the opportunity presented itself.

Brice sipped his wine. “I have a business with two other LMTs, and I work in a building near the hospital. I offer a variety of modalities, but my favorite is therapeutic massage.” He picked at his food while he spoke, pushing a piece of shrimp around in the rice. “I do some home visits. Got a couple of clients who pay me well for my time in the evening.” He met Dakota’s gaze. “I don’t think I have to ask if you’re any good at your profession.”

Dakota chuckled before speaking. “I’m retiring very comfortably at thirty-five. Not many people can say that.”

Taking a bite and chewing slowly, Brice nodded with agreement. “Hmm. Maybe you can become a chef. You’ve got a few more good years left.”

“Only a few?” Dakota’s lips twitched with a smile.

Brice felt his cheeks heat. “I didn’t mean to say you’re old. Just that…”

“Yes?” Dakota asked when his words dropped off.

“Never mind.” He laid his fork on the table, gulped the last of his wine, and pushed away to stand. He started to walk toward the bathroom. From the sudden blush to his cheeks, it was apparent that Brice was embarrassed. Over what, Dakota wasn’t quite sure.

“Brice.” Hearing his name stopped Brice, but he didn’t turn around. Though Dakota could have easily taken offence to the reference to his age, it truly didn’t bother him. He was well aware of the age difference between them.

Dakota ogled Brice’s back. Youth still clung to his body’s slender build. A couple of years of weight lifting could fill Brice out. But why should he care? He’d leave tomorrow and move on with his life, no longer subject to the whims of any client.

He stood and held out his hand. “Come here.”

Brice turned around but hesitated to move, and Dakota couldn’t blame him. However, he was hired to do a job. That’s what he needed to keep his mind focused on, not thinking too much about Brice’s insecurities or unlikely future possibilities.

When Brice finally approached him, his eyes were downcast and his movements slow. Unsure.

With confidence, Dakota grabbed his hand and dragged him to the bed. When they both kneeled on the mattress, Dakota leaned over and searched the bedside table drawer for what he needed. Winter had more than stocked up. There were a variety of condoms, all shapes, sizes, and styles; lubes galore; and some small sex toys, like vibrating eggs and dildos. An old childhood circus tune ran through his mind, only his version had different lyrics: Condoms and vibrators and lubes, oh my! Imagine marketing that to the public.

Shaking away the insane nonsense gathering in his head, Dakota turned back to his weekend client. He placed the paraphernalia within reach before lying back on the bed.

“Let’s see if there’s really any magic in those hands.”

Tortured Heroes

I’ve noticed a trend as I look back at my favorite books. The one thing they all have in common…each has a tortured hero. I’ve also noticed that authors writing about tortured heroes are on a rise. Especially in the paranormal and historical romance genre.

I, myself, am learning to write more tortured characters and loving it!

But why do we (or I) love them? They usually start out the story as brooding, filled with attitude, and generally complete asses. But isn’t that what makes them interesting? Or maybe it’s the way they change as the plot goes along and they meet the heroine (or hero if you’re reading a m/m book). The change, from my perspective, is huge if the story is done correctly and not rushed.

However, there are other things that draw my attention to these poor characters. Whether they go through physical torture (my fave) or mental torture…or even both, the hero has an incredible strength to survive. Yes, they are many times imperfect and have crutches, like drugs, alcohol, or sex *hmmm, that one may not be so bad –wink *.

But these men have overcome adversity and survived, stronger even. Also, once they meet their “light” to their “dark” (is that from Christine Feehan’s Dark series?), they become very protective over what is “theirs”. The best part is that they find redemption in one form or another by the end of them book.

I like to think there are men outside of romance novels that carry many of those traits. I know my own DH says that I brought light to his world. That I’ve helped him become a better man. Does a crappy first marriage count for mental torture? So, see, I have hope that there are some really good men out in the world. Unfortunately, they are sometimes hard to find.

Okay, I’ve babbled more than most of my blog posts, but I thought I’d end with a list of some of my favorite tortured heroes – in no particular order.
Remember, I’m a series-ho so they are all from series that I’ve read through the years.

* Jacques from Christine Feehan’s Dark series – Dark Desire
He was locked away and starved by his enemies after being physically tortured.

* Tain from The Immortals series (Joy Nash, Robin T. Popp, etc.) – The Redeeming
Poor Tain was lured away from his brothers by a demon and tortured physically and mentally for 700 years. Can you imagine? I’d go a little nuts too.

*Zsadist from J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series – Lover Awakened
He was a blood slave to a sadistic bitch vamp for a long time (sorry, can’t remember the exact time frame) but it messed him up mentally and he bore the physical scars from his experience.

*Richard and Asher form Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series
Poor, dear Richard is mentally tortured by his indecisions when it comes to Anita. He can’t fight his desires/needs/connect to her, but also can’t seem to fully embrace his true self. Every book wears me out as much as it does Anita *sigh*.
Asher bears the physical scars of his past capture and torture when vampires weren’t well looked upon.

*Daegus MacKeltar from Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series – The Dark Highlander
Daegus houses the 13 evil Druids inside of him, which he accepted to save his twin brother’s life. Okay, I have trouble with just my own brain inside my head, let along 13 others, lol.

*Ken Norton from Christine Feehan’s Game series – Deadly Game
Ken has both physical scars all over his body from being captured and tortured, and of course some mental difficulties from the experience.

*Reyes (Keeper of Pain) from Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series – Darkest Pleasure
Yes, all the LoU warriors are tortured because they each hold an evil deity inside of them, but Reyes was the one that really touched my heart so far. I’ve never seen the need to cut so strong, or to inflict pain upon oneself so powerful.

*The Paladins in Alexis Morgan’s Paladin series
Can you imagine being killed over and over and being brought back time and time again in order to protect the world? I’ll admit to needing to catch up on this series, but the first 3 books I read, each hero was equally tortured with their dilemma that they faced at being a Paladin.

*Acheron in Sherryl Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series
Last, but certainly not least, is Ash. That man *drool* is the ultimate tortured hero. If you haven’t read this book…it’s a MUST! It actually had me in tears several times and talk about yelling and muttering at the pages. Never done so much with another book.

I’ve found a website with more tortured heroes in a variety of genres if you’d like to see more.

Who are your favorite tortured heroes? Why do you love them?

Do not wait for change. Do what you can now.

Treva Harte & Loose-Id in the Washington Post!

I had the great pleasure of having lunch one day with Treva Harte (who is one of the quad that owns Loose-id, so that makes her my boss *g* ) while we were at RT this year in Orlando. I found her very down to earth, friendly, and enjoyed the time to get to know her. Though I haven't met the other three of the owners in person, they've always been great about getting back and answering any questions I have. Which is why I love being with Loose-id so much...they have awesome people working there. ^-^

Anyway...The Washington Post had a great article about Treva and Loose-id. Take a moment and check it out.

What are you reading Wednesday!

Well, I was going to wait a week or so before doing another one of these, because I'm not always able to read a lot. However, this past week, I've been a reading fiend! Okay, I haven't read like 10 books or anything, but I've read more than usual as of late.

I'm still reading Vol 1 of Night World. I'm one of those people that can read 3 or 4 books at a time and still remember and keep track of what's going on in each one. I'm what I call a mood-reader. If something kind of slows for me or drops my interest, I move on to one of my other books. I guess I was in the mood for a bit more sex than a YA can give me, so I picked up my e-reader.

I'd gobbled down the first 3 books of the Immortal series (written by Jennifer Ashley, Robin T Popp, & Joy Nash) and had started the 4th book, but got distracted by completing my own book, edits, and everyday life stuff and other responsibilities.
The Gathering (about Hunter *drool*) hooked me right back in. I LOVED it - and Hunter, of course. However, I noticed that what really kept me intrigued with these books was the 5th Immortal Brother - Tain.
Did I ever tell everyone that I'm a series-whore?!? I absolutely adore series and HAVE to read them from the first book, preferably in order.
Well, back to Tain... Once I completed the 4th book, I just had to start #5 (The Redeeming) because that's the book about Tain. It took me a day to read it!!!
Ok, I'm such a sucker for a truly tortured Hero. While reading this book, it hit me that all my favorite books were where the hero had been physically tortured. But I've decided to do a blog post all its own on tortured heroes later this weekend. ^-^

I have book 6, 7, & 8 (I think) sitting here on my laptop, but I've decided to take a little break from that world.

So, I'm now reading Kidnapped for Christmas by Evangeline Anderson. If you've never read one of her books, go get one! She writes both m/f and m/m books. The Assignment (from Loose-Id) was the first e-book I ever read and inspired me to actually write and submit my own stories. :) I've got several of her latest releases, so I'll probably try to get some of them read.

I'm also toying with the idea of starting Pleasure Bound by Larissa Ione. I've got all 3 books to her Demonica series. (See, told you I was a series-whore LOL). I'm going out of town tomorrow for a couple of days for some sun and the beach and since I'm not one for salt water and more of a sunbather, I like to read. And I jut can't stand the thought of sand in my e-reader, so paperback will have to do ;)

So what are you reading this week??

Now, I'm off to finish edits to Never Too Late.

What are you reading Wednesday!

Thinking of trying to generate some chatter so I thought I'd try an occassional "What are you reading?"

So tell me...what are you reading? It can be print or e-book. Romance or non-fiction. No matter to me and of course I'm always on the look out for good books to buy. ^-^

I personally just finished Michele Bardsley "I'm the Vampire, That's Why." This was the first of thise series that I read by her and I really enjoyed it. It had all sorts of conflict/drama and stuff happening all the time, not to mention great attraction between the two main characters. I really can't wait to read the rest of the series now.

Now, I've started Vol. 1 of the Night World series by LJ Smith. It's a YA paranormal book that includes 3 of her stories. I think there's a total of 3 books with 3 stories each. *shrug* I'm on the first story and so far it's not bad. Never read anything by her before, so it's a "new" author for me. :)

Are you reading anything interesting??? Enquiring minds want to know ;)

Tantalizing Tuesday

Advanced blog posts saved my visitors from having to come and see no posts the past couple of weeks as my laptop crashed and I struggled to get everything back going again. I learned an important lesson of printing out stuff more and to save all my files (on my external hard drive) at least once a week rather than once a month or so. :( Still picking up some pieces here and there, so the updates to the blog and my site will have to wait until next week *sigh* But not a lot of news going on. Just working edits for Never Too Late and trying to get my muse back in gear.

Have a wonderful week!
Oh, and can someone send me one of those above for some stress relief? ;)
Keep things in perspective.
